Short Course: Machine Learning for Biologists
Date: May 13th 2019 (arrival at venue 15.00-18:00) to May 15th (15.00)

Description: The workshop ‘Machine Learning for Biologists’ is intended to introduce the students to the fast growing discipline of Machine Learning and its application within Biology, especially Ecology and Biodiversity Informatics. The main focus of the workshop is hands on computer exercises, where students apply deep learning methods (such as Convolutional Neural Networks and Recurrent Neural Networks) to various problems, for instance image analysis. It is also possible to bring your own data and get supervision about how to apply deep learning techniques, although time may limit how far we can get with this during the workshop.
We will use Keras for the computer exercises. Students must bring their own laptop and must have basic knowledge of Python programming.

Course teachers: Xiaodong Duan (postdoc), Jesper Erenskjold Moeslund (researcher), Jesper Bladt (senior advisor). All from Aarhus University working with ecology and biodiversity informatics.

Required background: Basic knowledge on Python programming.

Course level: PhD students and young scientists will have priority.

Place: The venue of the workshop is the beautiful Kaløvig Center, Praestekravevej 46,
8410 Roende, Denmark. https://kalovigcenter.dk/en/

Fee: No fee, but participants must cover their own travel expenses. Food and accommodation is provided for all workshop participants.

Application: A short motivation (5 lines stating goals and expectations) and a 1 page CV should be submitted to JB@bios.au.dk latest by 1st March 2019.
